Holly Rucker (’19) is a senior at James Madison University where she is majoring in Biology. She is in the JMU Honors program with a minor in Biochemistry and Astronomy. She has been conducting field and lab research in Canada for her area of study. Her thesis is focused on female mimicry in garter snakes.
Holly has won multiple awards for her research, including funding her research with a Hillcrest Scholarship from the Honors College. Recently she won the Stoye Award in Physiology and Physiological Ecology at the 2018 Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists for the presentation of her research results. Holly also plans to provide hands-on research opportunities to high school students through the Shenandoah Valley Scholars Latino Initiative.

John B. has accepted a verbal offer from Marymount University, in Arlington, VA. for his exceptional talent in baseball. John is currently a senior attending Paul VI High School where he is a catcher for the Panthers varsity baseball team. Although he is a catcher for PVI, John will be a utility player for the Marymount Saints. John's family has been part of SJS for many years. His sister, Elizabeth (Class of 2013) attends Radford University and his brother, Christopher, is in 5th grade.
Madison G. has accepted a verbal offer from Drexel University, in Philadelphia, PA., for her outstanding performance in softball. Madison currently attends Bishop O'Connell High School where she is in her second year as a varsity softball player. She will play Division 1 softball as a catcher for the Drexel University Dragons. Congratulations, Madison, we wish you continued success!
Alyssa C. won the 1st place award for the Knights of Columbus Citizenship Essay Contest for the District, Region and State (137 Districts) AND runner up Internationally for her “Going to the Periphery” essay! Completion of the essay was required by all Diocesan 8th grade students. Alyssa’s essay was selected and nominated by St. Joseph School. Congrats! This summer, Alyssa’s basketball team won the USJN National Championship. Her talent was noticed as she was selected to participate in the exclusive Rites of Passage Event for top middle school players across the country! It didn't stop there -- she was also selected to participate in the East Coast Middle School All-Star Championship in Atlantic City, playing for the South team. Both Alyssa’s AAU Basketball team and Travel soccer teams finished second in the country last year. Alyssa is attending Paul VI High School and is planning to play basketball for the Panthers. She has worked extremely hard and we wish her continued success on and off the court!
