The track & field season runs from mid March to mid May. We have one end of season Diocese-wide track & field meet (with 15-20 parishes) the weekend of May 12-13. Our practices take place on Sundays and Tuesdays starting March 11; come as often as your schedule allows. Our first practices (weather permitting) are Sunday March 11, 4 pm at the track behind Herndon Middle School; and Tuesday March 13, 6:30 pm at the caboose in downtown Herndon on the W&OD.
Track & field is fun on its own and great for developing speed, skills, and stamina for other sports. Newcomers (3rd through 8th grade) at all skill levels are always welcome. Come to a practice to try it out before deciding whether to sign up. Season fees are $30 student / $50 family (+ $10 t-shirt), by March 20.

We hope you are looking forward to a fun season of track. We are very excited to be having our first SJ track & field practice this Sunday, March 11, weather permitting, at Herndon Middle School (901 Locust St), 4 to 5:30 pm. If the weather is not cooperative I will let you know sometime during the weekend; we may move the starting time or cancel practice. If you are able to come, please ask your child to bring water (with their name on the bottle), warm clothes, and sneakers. We will have a short parent’s meeting at the end of Sunday’s practice to allow you to learn more about the season.
Our next practice after that is Tuesday March 13 at the Lynn Street red caboose on the W&OD trail, 6:30 to 7:15 pm, for a 20-25 minute run or run / walk. Even if you don’t picture yourself as a distance runner, give Tuesdays a try; we accommodate all paces. We will follow this Sunday and Tuesdayschedule until the first weekend of May. Come to as many practices as will fit your schedule and interest; no one is expected to attend every practice.
This season we have a valuable addition to our coaching team, welcoming one of our SJ Track alumni and current Herndon High School cross country team member Colin McCauley. Colin will assist with the Sunday practices. Parents are encouraged to run with us on Tuesdays, and to help as needed on Sundays.
A registration form is attached; you may bring it to the first practice or you may attend a few practices before deciding whether to sign up. Season cost is $30 / $50 family. T-shirts, needed for the meet and otherwise optional, are $10 each. You may pay for the t-shirt when you pay your season fee, or you may wait closer to the meet. T-shirt fees are waived for returning students who have grown out of theirs, as a small token of appreciation for their dedication to track, as well as for our eighth graders, as a thank you for trying something new as they complete middle school.
