Grades K-1
ead The Lonely Moose by John Sega-The story of a grumpy moose who was always alone. One day, a bird begins to be nice to the moose and the two become close friends. The moose learns that being kind is a great way to make friends and be happy.
After reading the book, the students reflect on why kindness is important and how we can show kindness at school.Discussion Questions:
- How did the moose help the bird?
- How did the bird help the moose?
- How did the moose feel when he was alone?
- Is it easy to be kind?
- Have you ever felt alone?
- Do acts of kindness have to be BIG?
- How old do you need to be to be kind?
- What are some ways you can be kind here at school? At home?
Students will complete the We can be kind like ‘The Lonely Moose’ worksheet in which they illustrate an act of kindness.Grade 2-
Read Kindness Quilt by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace http://craftycounselor.blogspot.com/2010/03/december-virtue-kindness.htmlWe will discuss different examples of kindness and then each student will create their own "quilt square" using scrap book paper.
Discussion questions:
- How did the Lion help the mouse?
- How did the mouse help the lion?
- Do you think the lion expected the mouse to repay with kindness?
- Do you have to be big to be kind?
- How old do you need to be to be kind?
- What are some acts of kindness you have done?
Grades 3- 4
Read Each Kindness By Jacqueline Woodson
Discussion Questions:- What do you think Maya is feeling? Shy, possibly afraid.
- What do you see in the picture that shows how Maya is feeling? Page 2-Maya’s head is down and she is staring at the floor. She is not smiling or looking at any other people in the room.
- Have you ever been in a new situation or met new groups of people for the first time? How did you feel?
- Why didn’t anyone in the class choose to be kind to Maya?
- Can being kind be difficult sometimes?
- Kindness is like tiny waves “each little thing we do goes out, like a ripple into the world.” Chloe was unable to think of even a tiny kindness she had done. What small act of kindness could Chloe have shown during the story? Chloe could have smiled at Maya, she could have played with Maya, she could have complimented Maya on her fancy dress.
- Is it important to be kind? In school? At home? In your community?
- Brainstorm examples of kindness in each setting.
Students will complete the Gift of Kindness Worksheet in which they will illustrate or write about three acts of kindness they plan to complete.

Compliment Web Activity- Focuses on giving the person you roll the ball of string to a meaningful, specific compliment.
- Each student, upon receiving the ball of string and a compliment, will thank the person, then wrap the string around a finger so they don’t drop it, and will send it on to someone else with a compliment.
- Students must use self-control, meaning they are not allowed to pull, shake, or drop their string.
- How did giving/receiving compliments feel?
- Is this an easy or difficult way to show kindness?
- Can you do this at school? Home? In the community?

Grades 7-8-
Let’s Spread Kindness “Pay it Forward” PPT (Classflow) with video
Students will create graffiti boards (School, community, home, sports/extracurriculars). Graffiti boards can be displayed in each homeroom as a reminder of the acts of kindness they can complete.
Grades K-1: PPT slides "Who is our counselor?". Mrs. Potato head activity that demonstrates the job of a counselor and coloring activity.

Grades 2-4: PPT slides "Who is our counselor?": Students will learn more about the job of a counselor through reading “Mrs. Joyce Gives the Best High Fives” by Erainna Winnett. Students will complete an "about me" handout that will help me gain information about each student.

Grades 5-8: PPT slides "Who is our counselor?" Students will learn the role of a school counselor and the reasons they can request a meeting with me. They will take a short Quiz on what they learned and will complete an "about me" worksheet to help me get to know them better.
