Dear Fifth & Sixth Grade Parents,
“Battle of the Books” is a literary club open to students in grades five and six that supports the reading and discussion of fifteen selected books. The books selected for reading are chosen by Diocesan librarians each year for the Battle of the Books program. The battle is an “It’s Academic”-like competition held in May. In the spring, a team of five students will be chosen from among the club members to compete in this annual Diocesan-wide event.
The SJS Battle of the Books club will meet on Tuesdays from 3:15 PM to 4:00 PM in the SJS Library. Please sign the attached permission form to allow your child to join. It should be given to his/her classroom teacher along with your $10 registration fee (check or FACTS charge).
Our first meeting, on Tuesday, October 3rd, will be an orientation meeting for students. A calendar for the year with the books to be read before each meeting will be given at the first meeting. A snack/drink sign up will come to you via email after the first meeting. The first book selected for discussion on October 10 is Save Me a Seat by Weeks.
In order to take an active part in our book discussions, it is imperative that each student has completed his/her reading of the book for that week. Having a folder for notes and hand-outs is also a good idea. Generally, only three copies of each book will be available for check-out in the SJS library. Students should plan ahead and utilize their public libraries as much as possible. Should you wish to purchase any of the books, they will all be available for purchase at our school book fair in October.
Please have your child return his/her permission form to the classroom teacher by Friday, September 29th. We look forward to a stimulating year of exploring, learning, and sharing books and the joy of reading!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Heather Brown & Mrs. Patty Harmon
